If you’ve been dreaming of boat engagement photos in Austin or Central Texas, this one is about to live rent-free in your head in the best way. Kristen and Bryan’s Lake Travis boat engagement photos were full of sunshine, wind-blown movement, and the kind of joy you can’t fake.
But what made this session extra meaningful? This wasn’t just a pretty location. It was their story.

Kristen and Bryan go all the way back to their days at Lake Travis High School. The Lake Travis area has always been part of their story, so choosing to take their engagement photos on the water felt like the most natural, full-circle moment.
Even their wedding venue overlooks Lake Travis, which made this session feel like a preview of everything to come. When your location actually means something, your photos hit different. They feel personal, layered, and completely yours.

We kicked things off at Lakeway Marina, where we met up with Captain Oliver and boarded a sailboat for the evening. The skies were perfectly sunny, but the wind showed up with a whole personality of its own. Or as Captain Oliver called it, “spirited.” And honestly? He wasn’t wrong.

If you’re considering engagement photos on the water, here’s the inside scoop from a wedding photographer in Austin TX with over a decade of experience, including multiple boat and sailboat sessions on Lake Travis. Windy days can be the trickiest to photograph. It’s unpredictable and can quickly go from romantic to chaotic. This is where hiring a photographer with experience really matters. Knowing how to position you, guide movement, and keep hair working for you instead of against you is everything. When your photographer knows how to work with the wind, that movement becomes one of the most beautiful parts of your photos.
And when it’s done right? You get that effortless, Beyoncé-level movement that looks straight out of a magazine.
Choose outfits that move beautifully
Flowy dresses and lightweight fabrics photograph so well on the water.
Embrace the wind instead of fighting it
Movement adds life and energy to your images when it’s guided intentionally.
Bring a hair clip or ponytail holder
Kristen did this and it gave her multiple hairstyle options throughout the session.
Trust your photographer’s direction
Small shifts in how you stand or turn can keep your hair flowing in the right direction instead of across your face.

Kristen absolutely nailed her outfit choices, and after seeing her sneak peeks, she said something that I loved. Each outfit matched the lighting perfectly, and she was so right.
Here’s how it all came together:
She started in a pink dress that popped perfectly in the bright afternoon sun. It felt fun, fresh, and full of personality.
As the light softened, she changed into a dreamy white dress that caught that golden glow in the most flattering way.
For the final look, Kristen wore a stunning layered black tulle dress while Bryan stepped into a suit. It was giving full black-tie energy on the water.
To wrap it all up, they popped champagne as the sun dipped lower and we made our way back to the dock. It was the kind of ending that feels like a celebration and a deep exhale all at once.

There’s something about being out on the water that instantly shifts the energy. Everything slows down. It feels peaceful, private, and completely removed from the usual busy pace of the city.
For couples like Kristen and Bryan, who have a genuine connection to Lake Travis, it adds even more meaning. You’re not just choosing a pretty backdrop. You’re choosing a place that holds memories.
As a photographer, sessions like this are incredibly fulfilling. I love photographing at classic Austin locations, but there’s something extra special about creating in a space that’s deeply personal to each couple. It keeps things fresh, creative, and honestly, it fills my cup in the best way.
I left this session feeling so grateful to do this work and to tell stories like theirs.

If you’re considering a session on a boat like this, here are a few quick FAQs to help you get started:
Golden hour is always a favorite. Plan to start your session about 1.5 hours before sunset.
Not necessarily, but it is helpful. You’ll have a captain guiding the boat, and I’ll guide you through everything else.
Flowy dresses, breathable fabrics, and outfits that match the colors you’ll find in nature around you work best. Think blues, creams, whites, and tans, just like their second outfit. Bringing multiple outfits, including a black tie option, is always a win.
