Planner-Approved. Client-Loved.
If you’ve ever wondered how to make downtown Austin feel completely yours for engagement photos, the secret is simple. You set that alarm clock early and meet me at sunrise! That’s exactly what Zia and Alex did for their Butterfly Bridge Engagement Session in the Seaholm District.
Zia and Alex wanted modern city aesthetics with a laid-back, storytelling vibe. They wanted something that felt “street style” but still romantic. The Butterfly Bridge, just steps from the Austin Public Library, was the perfect backdrop. Not only does it feature sleek, architectural lines, but it also offers quick access to other photo-worthy spots like the 2nd Street District, Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge, and the industrial-chic Seaholm Power Plant.
Fun fact: Zia’s dress even had a delicate butterfly pattern, such a sweet nod to the location.
Here’s the thing: downtown Austin can get crowded fast. By starting at sunrise, we avoided foot traffic, photo-bombers, and midday heat. Instead, we got the most dreamy golden light, cool morning air, and a peaceful city all to ourselves. Brides, if you want a relaxed session without dozens of strangers in the background, sunrise is your best friend.
One of my absolute favorite frames from this session happened when Alex gently fixed Zia’s necklace. It was such a small gesture, but it led to a perfectly candid photo filled with the exact kind of authentic energy Zia loves. Their laughter, the way they looked at each other — you can feel their connection in those images. One of her favorite images was the following black and white one.
After I delivered their gallery (crazy fast, as always), Zia emailed me:
“Thank you so much for getting our photos ready so quickly. We’re absolutely in love with them! You captured us so beautifully that narrowing it down to our top 10 was way harder than we expected (in the best way).”
They’re already married now (you can see their Villa Antonia wedding here) but their engagement session still makes me smile.
Best Time of Day:
Sunrise! You get soft light, no crowds, and cooler temps. Just make sure the sun is high enough, so the downtown buildings don’t block the light.
Best Time of Year:
Fall and Spring in Austin are perfect for comfortable weather.
What to Wear:
Patterns and textures look incredible here. Zia’s butterfly-print dress paired beautifully with the bridge’s sleek white lines. For grooms, a tailored jacket or layered look adds depth to your photos. I always recommend that whatever you wear, you feel confident and comfortable in it. When it doubt, lean into colors that you find in nature for more timeless engagement photos.
Nearby Spots for Variety:
Ending with this one because it is 100% the candid, romantic street style photos they were hoping for from their Austin engagement photos.
For over ten years, I’ve photographed Austin weddings and engagements full time, with over 140 five-star reviews on The Knot. My couples love my timeless, true-to-color editing, crazy fast turnaround times, and personalized storytelling. I help with outfit planning, timeline creation, and I make sure you feel confident in front of my camera. This is even true for those that swear you’re “awkward” in photos.
When you book your engagement session with me, you’re getting more than just photos! You’re getting a stress-free experience, images that make you feel like the best version of yourself, and a gallery you’ll be obsessed with!
Sunrise is ideal for soft light, fewer crowds, and cooler temperatures. It gives you a peaceful, relaxed session with stunning city views. Bonus: Torchy’s is right there and open early if you need a breakfast taco.
Chic yet casual outfits with patterns and textures work beautifully against the modern architecture. Layering is great for cooler mornings. Something that you feel confident and comfortable in is always best.
Most sessions last about 60 minutes, possibly up to 90 minutes, if everyone is still feeling it with photos. That is plenty of time to capture a mix of candid and posed photos without feeling rushed.
I deliver galleries in half the time of most local photographers. All galleries are delivered within 4 weeks or less. This allows you to start sharing your photos while the excitement is still fresh.
