Why do children love Bubbles so much? There is something almost magical about them, isn’t there? Bubbles start off as a thin layer at the end of a wand, soar to the sky, and disappear, like magic, at a single touch. The beautiful colors trapped inside it entrance the viewer and ignite the imagination. To me, there is nothing more playful and youthful than bubbles, which is why I think they make perfect props in any portrait photography session. Here are the top five suggestions I have for making bubbles part of your session:
5) Schedule an early morning shoot. Humidity is usually the highest in the morning, which helps with the longevity of a bubble’s lifespan. If it is too hot, the water in the bubble will evaporate, so the bubble will pop quicker.
4) Use a dark background. Bubbles stand out best when shot in the shade because they’ll reflect the light around them, which contrasts well to dark backgrounds.
3) Pick a location that isn’t incredibly windy. For bubbles to be in your photograph, they have to remain within the location of your photo session. While we cannot control the wind, we can pick areas that are slightly less windy than other locations tend to be. In the photograph below, we “cornered” ourselves between a fence on one side, a building on the back side, and a SUV on the other, effectively blocking the wind from chasing off our bubbles.
2) Use a Bubble Machine. The more bubbles in the photo, the better! I’ve found that the best way to produce bubbles (with the least amount of man power) is with a bubble machine. Also, two dedicated people (not in the photo) each using a four-part wand can get the job done, too!
1) Have Fun! I love bubbles for the youthfulness and playfulness they invoke at every age. If you’re wanting to incorporate bubbles into your session for those reasons, you’ll have to be willing to have fun and be a little silly with the bubbles. Besides, who wants to remember anything but enjoying life and the fun times?
