Welcome
December 6, 2012
We’re officially into December, which means Christmas season is upon us! For those moms and dads out there who are still trying to get their Christmas photos taken for the Christmas cards, here are some of my tips for taking your child’s photo in a Christmas setting.
I shot these next photos with all the lights off in the house, except for the Christmas tree lights. My style is usually to shoot pretty wide open (f/2.0 or wider), as that allows the most light to enter the camera and puts everything but your subject out of focus. Since all other lights are off, the ISO (which is how sensitive your camera is to the light) is pretty high and the shutter speed (how long your camera is taking the light in) is pretty slow. Be careful here, though, as slow shutter speeds allow for blurred movement and kids don’t always want to sit still.
Settings: ISO 1600, F/1.6, Shutter 1/50
Settings: ISO 800, F/1.4, Shutter 1/100
Just have fun with it! Camera settings will be different in every situation, so play around until you’ve achieved the look you’re going for. If it doesn’t work, tune in next week, as I’m currently trying to convince my sisters to let me borrow their kiddos to show you how to photograph your child in the day time sitting in front of the tree. Keep your fingers crossed!
Merry Christmas,
Mylah Renae
