Need to Create the perfect Wedding day Timeline?
February 6, 2026
When planning an outdoor wedding at Pecan Springs Ranch, one of the biggest decisions couples make is how to structure the timeline so guests feel cared for while still leaving room for glowy portraits. Annie and Mike’s November celebration was the perfect example of how thoughtful planning creates a relaxed, joyful experience for everyone involved. With sunshine all day, a ceremony beneath the wedding oak tree, and portraits intentionally timed around the property’s unique light patterns, their wedding proved that when guest experience and photography strategy work together, the entire day flows effortlessly.
As an Austin-based wedding photographer who has documented many celebrations at Pecan Springs Ranch, I help couples anticipate how the property’s hills, trees, and shifting light impact everything from ceremony timing to portrait locations. Annie and Mike leaned into that guidance, creating a timeline that protected golden hour, kept guests comfortable, and allowed the day to unfold with a natural, unhurried rhythm.
Pecan Springs Ranch is known for its towering trees, rolling hills, and expansive property. Annie and Mike chose it specifically for the natural landscape, so we leaned into the trees as a consistent backdrop throughout their day. One important thing many couples don’t realize is that you lose golden hour light about 20 minutes earlier than expected here because of the hill on the west side of the property. This small detail can dramatically impact portrait lighting. For couples dreaming of that glowy, sunset look, I typically recommend planning an outdoor ceremony about two hours before sunset when doing a first look. If you prefer more of a blue-hour feel, 1.5 hours works beautifully. Annie and Mike trusted this guidance, scheduling their ceremony at 3:30 PM ahead of a 5:30 PM sunset, ensuring we had time for family portraits and those just-married golden hour images.
Annie and Mike shared a private first look tucked among the trees before the ceremony. We completed couple portraits and all wedding party photos beforehand so their twelve-person wedding party could head straight to cocktail hour instead of waiting around for pictures. Guest-first decisions like this change the entire energy of a wedding day. No long pauses or wondering when the celebration starts. Just seamless movement from ceremony to connection.
They selected the wedding oak ceremony site, one of five outdoor options at Pecan Springs Ranch. What made this location especially strong was the side lighting. While backlit ceremonies can be gorgeous, they often create squinting and harsh shadows for walking down the aisle photos. Side light protects those once-in-a-lifetime moments while still producing dimension and warmth in images. With clear November skies, everything looked radiant.
(Bonus tip: The creek and fireplace ceremony sites often place couples in direct light, which can be much less forgiving.)
Cocktail hour unfolded beneath the ranch’s spacious 4,500-square-foot covered pavilion, which also serves as an excellent rain backup. Thankfully, the weather was perfect.

Thoughtful details like seating and airflow ensured guests weren’t stuck standing indoors or crowded around a bar.
Even better? That floral wall later reappeared behind the head table, maximizing its visual impact throughout the evening. Smart design always wins.
Because their engagement session also took place at Pecan Springs Ranch, Annie and Mike already knew which backdrops they loved most. The pond quickly became their favorite, making it an easy choice for golden hour portraits after the ceremony. Engagement sessions at your venue aren’t just about beautiful save-the-dates. They act as a rehearsal for your wedding photography, helping us refine locations ahead of time so the day feels effortless.
Just after golden hour portraits, Annie shared a private moment with her sister, who read her a heartfelt letter while Mike joined cocktail hour. In 15 years of photographing weddings, this was a first for me. It was tender, emotional, and a beautiful reminder of the depth of sister relationships. Not every meaningful moment happens at the altar. Some unfold quietly, away from the crowd.
Then, just after sunset, we captured additional portraits in the garden near cocktail hour. Timing here matters tremendously. That garden must be photographed after the sun drops behind the hill, otherwise lens flare creates hazy, soft-looking images that appear slightly out of focus. By stepping away while guests enjoyed dinner, Annie and Mike avoided becoming a spectacle and ensured no one was waiting on them to begin the evening. It was intentional. Efficient. Guest-centered. And visually stunning.
Dinner was hosted inside the main hall, giving guests a climate-controlled environment free from bugs, something outdoor weddings don’t always guarantee in Texas.
If you’re considering this venue, here are a few expert tips:
When the timeline serves both photography and guest experience, the entire wedding feels elevated.
Pecan Springs Ranch is tucked beneath towering oak trees in the Texas Hill Country. It’s only ten miles from downtown Austin at 10601 B Derecho Dr, Austin, TX 78737. Couples love this venue for its peaceful setting, multiple outdoor ceremony locations, and thoughtful guest flow that keeps the entire celebration feeling relaxed and connected. Within the Austin City Limits, this venue makes travel simple for guests while still delivering that destination-style experience everyone remembers.

Pecan Springs Ranch offers five outdoor ceremony sites surrounded by mature trees, creating natural shade and beautiful photo backgrounds. The property feels private while still being easily accessible from downtown Austin, giving couples the best of both worlds.
Spring and fall are especially popular thanks to mild temperatures and vibrant greenery. November weddings are a favorite because couples often enjoy comfortable weather that allows for both outdoor ceremonies and cocktail hours.
Because the hill on the west side of the property blocks sunlight earlier than expected, couples typically lose golden hour about 20 minutes before the official sunset. If you love glowy portraits, plan your ceremony roughly 2 hours before sunset.
A first look allows most portraits and wedding party photos to happen before the ceremony so guests are not waiting during cocktail hour. Many couples choose this option to maximize time with their favorite people.
The tree-lined paths, pond at golden hour, and garden areas after sunset consistently photograph beautifully. Engagement sessions at the venue can help identify your favorite spots ahead of the wedding day.
The venue features a 4,500-square-foot covered pavilion, providing an excellent backup plan that still feels open and inviting. If there is a heavy downpour of rain, you can always host your ceremony in Pecan Springs Ranch’s great hall like this couple did.
