Rene and Leila’s Hotel Ella engagement photos in Austin were an absolute dream! If you’re looking for a location that balances cozy moments and architectural charm, you’ll love their winter session!

Originally, Rene and Leila planned their engagement session at a local garden, but rain threatened to wash out their day. Instead of finding a new day that required rescheduling hair, makeup, or time off work, they swapped locations. Choosing a location with covered patios allowed us to proceed as planned, so the session went on regardless of weather. That’s exactly why Hotel Ella became the perfect backdrop for their engagement photos! The covered patio kept us dry while we photographed with natural light outside. I’m obsessed with the stunning Greek Revival architecture! It’s a beautiful background for timeless, chic engagement photos in Austin.
Fun fact: they thought it was adorable that their names combined sound like mine! While that wasn’t the reason they booked me, it was such a cute connection that made our session feel even more personal.
Since I photographed Rene and Leila in December, the hotel had their Christmas wreaths up! The ornaments on the wreaths matched Leila’s sky blue dress, making every detail feel intentional. Her dress featured a timeless silhouette with a subtle touch of allure. The sheer panel at mid-thigh added a soft, romantic edge. Rene’s dark blue suit complemented her dress perfectly. Coordinating colors like this always elevates photos and creates harmony in images.
Part of what makes Hotel Ella engagement photos so special is the history behind the property. There is a love story built into it! Thomas Dudley Wooten, a founder of the University of Texas, purchased the land on which Hotel Ella now sits. Wooten’s son, Goodall, moved into the home on the property in 1900 with his new wife, Ella. It was Ella’s dad who built the mansion as a wedding gift for his daughter. Ella oversaw the transformation into a Greek Revival mansion. The mansion underwent an extensive renovation in 2013, blending modern luxury with rich historical character. Every corner offers architectural details perfect for engagement portraits and weddings, with its deep legacy of love.
Leila had her hair and makeup done by Lola Beauty. Getting your wedding beauty team to schedule your preview on your engagement session date makes a huge difference in how confident and comfortable you’ll be in front of the camera. It removes the stress of doing it yourself and ensures everything is polished and photo-ready. Engagement photos often require more makeup than your everyday routine. This is because cameras pick up details differently than the mirror. When you feel confident, it shows in your expressions, your posture, and your energy.
After the patio photos, we moved indoors to the bar area for some speakeasy vibes. The bartender crafted an old fashioned for Rene while Leila enjoyed a glass of champagne. They snuggled in the cozy corner booth near the fireplace, capturing warm, intimate moments perfect for a rainy or chilly day. This mix of indoor and outdoor shots allowed us to create so much variety.
Hotel Ella is centrally located in Austin near the University of Texas. It’s convenient to get to and is a visually stunning location for engagement sessions and weddings. There is a fee for photographing on-site, but the elegance, architecture, and history make it worth it!
Yes! Hotel Ella allows engagement sessions for a fee. The property provides stunning architecture, cozy indoor areas, and covered patios to make any season photogenic.
Choose outfits that complement each other in color and style. For winter sessions, layers, elegant textures, and pops of color like Leila’s sky blue dress photograph beautifully against the hotel’s neutral and historical backgrounds.
Book a location with covered patios or indoor options. Hotel Ella has both, which allows sessions to continue without rescheduling due to rain.
